HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was approved by congress to streamline electronic health records while also protecting patient, improving healthcare efficiency and reducing fraud and abuse. HIPAA set up national standards for electronic healthcare transactions and regulations for healthcare companies and their employees to follow which ensures security and privacy of Health Data. Whether its in-person healthcare or Telemedicine, clinicians are held to the same standards to comply with the HIPAA requirements and safeguard the patient’s healthcare data.

The challenge for Telemedicine lies in managing an electronic system with controlled access to a patient’s record by all employees. It also needs to have a proper encryption to protect data as transmission of information over communication lines can lend itself to hackers and other potential breach. Although Healthcare providers aren’t expected to become experts in firewalls, data encryption or network security, they are expected to find the right IT partner and have a BAA (Business Associate Agreement) that contractually guarantees the implementation of security practices and data encryption measurements.

Rinsoft partnered with a major Telemedicine company to assist them with implementing the security measure to ensure HIPAA compliance with their platform. Our professionals also created a training guide for the staff to closely follow the technical and physical safeguards outlined in HIPAA. Read more about the project below.
